The 50m Project

Since 2008, for the first time in human history, there are more people living in urban centres than in the country. The size and design of our cities, our economic structure and our technology-led lifestyles combine to create an illusion of human separation from nature.

The truth is we are just as intrinsically woven into the fabric of life as we always have been. The health of the natural world is our health and any illusion of separateness is just that – an illusion.

But here’s the good news. You don’t have to travel to a wilderness area to come face to face with the wonders nature has to offer. Just step outside your door and look at the world around you. Maybe you already know some of the plants and animals near your home? If you don’t we hope the 50m Project will inspire you to start your own journey of discovery. All the photos in the 50m Project pages were taken within, you guessed it – 50m of an urban home.

A recent study estimated that only one in five children between eight and twelve years old felt any connection with nature. Not only does that undermine a child’s physical and emotional wellbeing, it leaves a huge hole in the education of tomorrow’s decision makers.

So, why wait? Start your own 50m Project with your children. Just 50m – it’s not far but there sure is a lot to see.
